Off to school...and other news

Yesterday was the first day of school! Woo hoo! I am really happy (so far) about Jesse and Grace's teachers. They seem to really care about the students. I asked Grace if she wanted me to walk her into her class, but miss independent said that she knew right where her class was and walked in all by herself. I guess I should feel glad that she is so confident and independent (and I do) but this is also a rite of passage for the mom, too! I felt a little bad that I didn't get to walk her in. And then I realized that they would be gone for several hours and I cheered up real fast! Jesse seemed to sort of want me to walk him in, but didn't feel like he could say so because his little sister didn't need her mom, so he shouldn't need her, too! Today I sent them on the bus and all was well! I remember when I sent Jesse off to Kindergarten, I drove him to school the first week or so and walked him into class the first couple of days and then when I sent him on the bus, I put him on and then followed the bus and made sure he got to class. I guess it's different with #2! Well, they seemed to enjoy their first 2 days and I am enjoying a bit of freedom. It is much easier shopping with 2 as opposed to 4!

In other news: We had Dylan's 3 year check up today and wouldn't you know, I have an above average-sized child...not just "not tiny", but "above average"! He is 32 pounds (65%) and 37 3/4" tall (55%) How about that! And he is healthy to boot.
We also got the blood test results back for James and it turns out that he has a milk protein allergy that is likely causing his smallness...so guess what that means for mom? Either no milk products (ie: milk, cheese, yogurt or ice cream!) or we get him on Nutramigen formula. I haven't decided on the right path as yet. I know what I should do, but it remains to be seen what I will do. We will see how it goes.

So that's that. Can I really live without cheese and ice cream, oh, and butter??? The extra 15-20 lbs I am carrying around and the welfare of my little guy say yes, but....

Ooo!! That is a tough one! I'd go with formula and not feel guilty :) He is 6 months old - you've done good!

I will email you on facebook about this milk subject. We have been living almost dairy free for a long time now and I will tell you what products we like.

Cute first day stories and pic. Way cute "little" project...when are you making me one?
Ruby is 7 1/2 months and completely weaned and I do not feel sad at all:) I dry up by 9 months anyways, so I knew it would be better to do now so I could get her used to the bottle...but it didn't take nearly as long as I thought it would!
I would NOT go off dairy...but that is me...selfish. But good luck with your decision!!

i'm so sorry about the allergies! is the doctor concerned about his development? or simply that his size is small? because when we found out sophie was allergic to everything around 9 months, i tried for about a day to go off everything she was allergic to (dairy, soy, eggs, nuts, wheat, etc.) and it was pretty much impossible for me. so i continued to eat whatever, and sophie -- while she still stayed on the small side -- was still fine and continued to develop at a the same growth curve. she's still a little shrimpy shrimp, now, but we have no concerns about her health -- she just can't have dairy, eggs or nuts, still.

of course, that was just my experience. milk is in a lot of things you wouldn't think of (like bread, etc.), so trying to cut it out of your diet could be a big pain. whatever you choose to do, james will be fine, i'm sure.

sorry for the novel. if you have any questions about allergy stuff, feel free to email me. i don't claim to be an expert, but we have been dealing with it for a couple of years now, so i can at least tell you about our experience. :)

the kids look so cute on their first day of school. i can't wait for ethan to start next week. i only wish grace were starting kindergarten at the same time! it would save a ton of money on preschool. :)

But just remember that if you have to give up ice cream you can always go for sorbets and italian ices. Though I have yet to find anything that could take the place of cream cheese.

my kids start school tomorrow, and it will be interesting to see which ones want me to be there for the big day.
bummer about james' allergy! i feel your pain. you can do it.........
but i won't blame you for deciding it's too much. but, you can do it!

Hooray for Dylan, and bummer for James. Good luck with figuring that one out. Sometimes I wish I had some sort of good reason to go off of ice-cream, etc., because I think it would help me with my lack of will-power. But mostly that would just be hard.

Hey Poppy! Sorry about James. Both my kids have had MSPI (Milk and Soy protein intollerance) as babies and I did the dairy/soy free diet--I actually found things to replace most of what I was missing (except cheese--never found anything good for that, but it just makes it that much more exciting when they do wean and I get to eat it again!) Like PB and Chocolate Chips melted in a tortilla for treats :) (And that would be why I didn't lose any baby weight while on that diet!) If you have any questions, you can email me. And the good news is they usually outgrow it!
