Sleepless nights and a trip to the ER

Saturday night I was up all night with Dylan. He has been having episodes every 3-6 weeks since last Christmas where he has trouble breathing. I took him to the Dr during one of these episodes several months ago and they said it was the dry air...nothing to worry about. We got a humidifier and use it religiously, yet he still keeps having them. Anyway, about 5am on Sunday, Dylan had been crying, unable to get comfortable and unable to be consoled (highly unlike him) so I decided to take him to the ER. I was tired and worried and I was prepared for them to treat me like an overprotective mom that brings her child in for any little sniffle (which I am far from!) I was justified! The Dr was very concerned about his breathing and considering admitting him to the hospital. They gave Dyl a breathing treatment, he had a chest x-ray and was tested for RSV among other things. The x-ray came back showing Bronchiolitis (no pneumonia, yeah!) and the other tests were clear and after the breathing treatment Dyl was feeling a lot better. By the time all the tests were in and the Dr cam back to see us, Dyl was running around the ER, flirting and playing peek-a-boo with the nurses. The Dr was surprised at the turn around and let us go home. But, not before diagnosing Dylan with Reactive airway disease (like asthma, they just don't diagnose kids this young with that) and giving us a RX for a nebulizer and albuterol to help Dylan breathe better. It made all the difference. Dylan is feeling much better and sleeping (yeah-now if the other two would've slept last night I'd feel much better today!) Can't they all sleep on the same night-oh what a miracle that would be!
Sorry, no pics again, I am being really lazy about those. I will get some on here soon.

That is so scary but I am glad your mother's instinct made you take him to the ER. I am glad they found what is wrong with him and I hope his breathing continues to get better.

breathing problems are always scary. its good that you've got those prescriptions now. and i hear you on the sleepless nights! you would think that the 4 year old and 3 year old in our house would finally have the whole sleeping in their own room all night long thing down. i guess not.

Join the club! The humidifier, ocean spray, snotty blue squeezie thing, nebulizer, club! That's one of the most worrisome mothering things--you know, that breathing thing! You're now a VERY seasoned mom for sure. The bright part...McKenzie was diagnosed with RAD and outgrew it at about 6 yrs old after having adenoids/tonsils removed. So there's hope for Dyl! I still take the big nebulizer machine on every vacation just in case. I'm still wondering when I'm going to get a decent night's sleep...it has been nearly 11 years so far! We did this to ourselves...that's the kicker!~ but it's worth it.

Hello Poppy!

Thanks so much for posting in my 2 motivational blogs and for putting me as 2 of your "blogs that you love"! It brought a smile to my face to see that!!

I'm also glad that your little guy is breathing better- and that they knew what was going on, so that you can now treat him at home when need be! Hopefully it will be something he outgrows:) Hope you get some rest tonight!

So sorry to hear about your rough night! I absolutely hate it when something is wrong with my child and I don't know if I should go to the ER or not. You made the right choice and I hope that Dylan continues to feel tip top.
Repeat after me:
Sleep? I don't need no stinkin' sleep.
:D

Oh, that sounds so scary - I hate it when kids have breathing problems. Hopefully he'll be okay now that they know the issue.

And no, kids never manage to coordinate sleeping through the night.

How's Dylan doing???

Do you want me to help you resize your slideshow so it fits on your page ...or do you prefer it that way?

ER in the middle of the night is pretty scary! How's he doing? Make sure you periodically clean (disinfect) the filter in your humidifier. I left water in mine while we were in CA and when I turned it on, after we got home, I couldn't breath - seriously - I found mold and mildew inside - threw it out really fast!!!!! (grossed me out - besides giving me an instant headache)
